Refreshing Pineapple Cucumber Salad Recipe

As we all prepare for warmer weather, we also prepare to host guests or attend patio parties, and what better way to rein in the warm weather than with a refreshing Pineapple Cucumber Salad.

Ingredients:
  • Pineapple Chunks
  • Cucumbers
  • Red Onions
  • Red & Green Bell Peppers
  • Avocado
Dice cucumber into small cubes. Slice onions, peppers, and avocado into small slices. Mix all ingredients and enjoy!

Now is the time to take care of your home’s lawn!

One of the most important steps you can take to prepare your lawn for the summer and the rest of the year is aeration and fertilization. Skipping a year or two can have long-term effects on the health of your home’s lawn. Here are some of the benefits of lawn aeration:
  1. Lawn aeration pokes small holes in the surface of your lawn to allow the soil to breathe.
  2. The holes allow water to penetrate deeper into the soil and be absorbed by the roots instead of evaporating.
  3. When fertilizer is applied to an aerated lawn, it goes deeper into the lawn and provides nutrients directly to the roots.
After you aerate your lawn, get it power raked. This will remove the thatch, and allow your lawn to absorb water, breathe easier, and grow deeper roots.

Next, make sure you give your lawn a good 'deep root watering.' Don't simply water your lawn for 30 minutes straight. Rather, water it for 8 minutes, then give it a 30 minute break, then water for 8 minutes again. This allows the roots to absorb the water, rather than it evaporating.

Easy Pineapple Lemonade for Spring Break

​We’ve all had strawberry or raspberry lemonade, but have you ever tried pineapple lemonade? This is the perfect, refreshing way to sit back and relax this spring break.

  • 2 cups Lemonade

Household Spring Cleaning Hacks to Make Life Easier

As the warmer weather approaches, we all get in the mood for a little bit of spring cleaning. Maybe “mood” isn’t the right word, but the spring cleaning WILL happen, and here’s a few tips and tricks to help you along the way:
  1. Disinfect cleaning sponges and rags. It’s not too often we think about cleaning the objects we use to clean. Wring out your sponges and dish rags, and microwave them for minute to disinfect them.
  2. Steam clean your microwave. Speaking of microwaves, an easy way to clean the grime from the inside is to mix 2 cups water with 2 tablespoons of vinegar and microwave on high for 3-5 minutes. The steam will make cleaning your microwave a breeze.
  3. Wax your stovetop for easier cleaning. After you get your stovetop clean, you can apply a thin layer of car wax to make cleaning up future spills much easier.
  4. Dishwasher for everything but dishes. There are a lot of household items you can clean in the dishwasher. Try hair brushes, pet bowls, plastic toys, refrigerator shelves, and soap dishes.

Classic Chili Recipe for Colorado Winter

We are all aware that Colorado winters can be bitter, cold, and downright unpleasant. One of the staples to warm up any night is chili. Try out this chili recipe for the whole family:

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion (diced)
  • 1 jalepeno pepper (seeded and diced)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 28 oz. can whole, peeled crushed tomatoes
  • 2 15.5 oz. cans kidney beans
1. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in large pot over medium heat. Add ground beef and break up the meat for about 5 minutes (or until browned). Remove meat and set aside.

2. Heat remaining oil in pot. Add onions and cook until golden brown. Add jalapeño and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions and jalapeño are soft.

3. Add garlic, chili powder, cumin, paprika, and tomato paste. Add salt and pepper to preferred taste. Cook, stirring regularly, until coated (about 1-2 minutes).

4. Stir in beef broth and crushed tomatoes and bring to a boil with high heat. Stir in ground beef and reduce heat to low to simmer for 30 minutes.

5. Stir in beans and their liquid and simmer until the beans soften and chili thickens (another 30 minutes).

​6. Serve with sour cream, cheddar cheese and tortilla chips.

Winter Tips to Take Care of Your Home

There are some extra things that we need to do as Colorado homeowners throughout the winter in order to take care of our homes and make sure things keep working correctly. Here are just a couple of things to keep in mind:
  1. Make sure to shovel your sidewalk and driveway when it snows. Not only can the accumulated ice be dangerous, but it helps out your neighbors by keeping the sidewalk clear. Another good tip is to avoid using rock salt, as it eats away at concrete!
  2. Be sure to check your plumbing pipes and sprinkler systems to make sure they don’t freeze. Insulated pipes are a great way to ensure pipes don’t freeze, and many local lawn care companies will blowout your sprinklers if you are unable to.
  3. Clear debris and ice jams from gutter systems. When your gutters and water runoff doesn’t work properly, you may get ice buildup or leaking water on your walkways, or worse, inside your home! Make sure to check your gutter systems or install heat tape if needed.

Get ready for football season with this Tailgate Sliders Recipe!

NFL is just around the corner! Impress with the best on Sundays with this mini-burger recipe from AllRecipes.com:
INGREDIENTS
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 (1.25 ounce) envelope onion soup mix
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 24 dinner rolls, split
  • ½ cup sliced pickles (Optional)
STEP 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together the ground beef and onion soup mix in a large skillet; cook and stir over medium-high heat until the beef is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink. Drain and discard any excess grease. Remove from heat. Stir the mayonnaise and Cheddar cheese into the ground beef mixture.
STEP 2
Lay the bottoms of the dinner rolls on the prepared baking sheet. Spread the cheese and beef mixture on the bottom half of each roll. Replace the tops. Cover with another sheet of aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray.
STEP 3
Bake in the preheated oven until the burgers are heated through and cheese melts, about 30 minutes. Serve with sliced pickles.

Summer Watermelon Avocado Salad Recipe

​This recipe combines two of our favorite things: watermelon and avocado. This salad recipe from AllRecipes is healthy, refreshing, and easy to prepare!
  • 4 cups cubed watermelon
  • 4 cups fresh baby spinach, torn
  • 2 large avocados - peeled, pitted, and diced
  • ¼ cup walnut oil
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • ½ teaspoon sweet paprika
Step 1
Combine watermelon, spinach, and avocados together in a bowl.
Step 2
Whisk walnut oil, olive oil, lime juice, and paprika together in a bowl; pour over watermelon mixture. Toss to coat.

Back to school tips for parents

Back to school can be a busy time for parents. We all have a lot on our plate, but as much as our kids can have anxiety about having new teachers or meeting new friends, parents also can find themselves stressed out trying to get everything together. Try out these tips to streamline the back to school process and enjoy your autumn in Northern Colorado!

1. Try to do back to school shopping during non-peak hours and days. Everyone seems to do their back to school shopping at the same time. If possible, try shopping during the middle of the day or on a Tuesday or Wednesday. With many parents still working from home, this could be easier than ever to find time during the day.

2. Go on any school tours or get-togethers before classes begin. Not only does this give you and your child an idea of what to expect, but it gives you a chance to meet other parents and children before the year starts. Your child will be much more comfortable when school starts if they have been to the school before or met some other kids.

3. Discuss classes and homework with your children every night. No matter what age your kids are, talking with them about their daily homework not only encourages them to finish it, it allows them to discuss the purpose of what they are learning and makes you more aware of their routine.

4. Involve your children in after-school activities or sports. These kinds of activities encourage social activity, making friends, and learning new interests and hobbies. In addition, as a parent it lets you connect with other parents and organize overlapping schedules to reduce anxiety and stress.
