Keep Your Pets Safe During Cold Weather!
Most of us who live in Colorado are well aware of how to take care of our pets during the cold winters, but it can never hurt to take a little extra time out to consider your animals, especially when it is below 20 degrees like it has been in the last week. Follow these tips to make sure your animals are safe this winter.
Know your pets’ tolerance to cold Animals have extremely different tolerance to cold, and this can vary from animal to animal, especially for different breeds of dogs. For example, a husky can tolerate much more out in the snow and cold than a chihuahua could. This may be obvious, but when pet owners come from warmer climates they may not always be aware of how much their pet can tolerate. Stay inside and limit walk distances Even outdoor dogs may need to come inside when the temperature drops. Even though we may think dogs and cats have higher tolerance to the cold because of fur, their paws, ears, and face are still susceptible to frostbite. Shorten walks when the temperature is exceptionally low and make sure to check their paws after walks and help them warm up! Safer and warmer sleeping spots Lastly, make sure that if your pets are outdoors in the winter, they have safe, warm spots to sleep or rest. This may be as simple as a doghouse, but in extreme cold, you may need to bring them inside or allow them a bed in your garage. Under Contract
