As a Fort Collins Realtor, I hear some pretty good stories from people who are either buying or selling their homes. They tell me about how their house is haunted, or they saw a ghost, or other things that I smile and laugh at. I personally have never seen a ghost so I don't have the personal experience in the matter, but I've heard plenty of stories from friends and clients alike.
If you want to hear a good ghost story, then you should read about the Fort Collins Haunted Garage that is entering it's last days as a Fort Collins building. The garage is going to be torn down sometime after Halloween because a new Old Town hotel is going to be built in it's place. The Haunted garage, which sits next to where the old Armadillo restaurant has been home to many things over the years. A Hay Loft, a Carriage House. It's even been rumored to have been used as the storage for some wreckage from a United Airlines flight that killed 50 people back in 1951. The City used to allow ghost tours in there before the deterioration of the building led them to stop those tours recently. I had been in there a couple of times on a tour, and there were some noises that definitely spooked everyone on the tour. The building is said to have been the home of James and Ewa Howe. The story is that James, while drunk, slit Ewa's throat out in front of the garage. Later that night, an angry mob of Fort Collins residents broke James out of jail and hung him in the only public lynching in Fort Collins history. No wonder the garage has some pretty interesting noises coming from it! We encourage everyone to go down to the Haunted Garage before it gets torn down to check it out a bit further. Once the hotel goes up, there might be a little haunting going on there as well, so perhaps the history will stick around a bit even though the foundation will be forever changed. With Halloween coming up, we hope that everyone has some plans to take in either a haunted house, take their kids out trick or treating, or have some fun in Fort Collins. And as always, give me a call for all your Fort Collins Real Estate needs.
